Do steel security doors rust?

Answer:
Steel is a base metal prone to oxidation or rust. The major reason for rust is no rust prevention primer and poor maintenance. All our doors are sprayed with a quality rust prevention primer. They are then finished with oil base enamel paint. The paint is applied with an electrostatic paint system. The major cause of rust after 2 years is dirt and grime builds up in combination of moisture. The dirt breaks down the protective coating and affects the base metal. This is especially evident on the screen portion of the security door. In order to eliminate this problem we are using galvanized screens only. Galvanizing is a zinc coating applied at the factory that resist corrosive liquids.

What is powder coating and will that keep my door from rusting?

Answer:
Powder coating is a process where a powder is sprayed on the door and then it is put in an oven and heated to up to 450 degrees. The powder melts on to the metal creating an extremely hard surface. This finish can be compared to the finish on your washing machine. The Gloss on this will last three times or longer than enamel paint. Rust resistance is at least twice as long. Disadvantages are that the powder coat finish is not resistant to cat spray, or lack of maintenance. The finish, because of its hardness is prone to chipping.
